It Only Takes a Category
Because this theme is targeted at businesses rather than journalists, it is not a blogging theme. Instead, the News functionality is there to provide a means of announcing new developments regarding the client’s business.
Comments are therefore disabled, and tags are not used. Of course, other useful features such as pagination, archives and search are enabled. And if required, any of the presently unsupported blogging-type features can be implemented.
QNRWP-A uses the standard WordPress feature of Categories to great effect. News Posts are categorized either with the “News” or “Uncategorized” categories. This makes it easy to write News Posts – if you forget to assign a category, it will be “Uncategorized”, and therefore recognized as a News Post. Other categories may then be used to mark Posts that represent other kinds of data. One good use case are customer testimonials. A Post assigned the “Testimonial” category may be used to create content for a Testimonials section in the sidebars.
If you’re already familiar with WordPress, you may know that some themes support the Post Formats feature. Post Formats allow you to assign a Format to a Post, such as “image”, “video”, “gallery” and a few others. QNRWP-A does not support Post Formats because they work like a special kind of category, but cannot be expanded with new types. Rather than mix Formats and Categories, potentially causing confusion, only Categories are used.
July 2018 update: All Posts are now News posts, because Custom Post Types are now used for other types of data, such as Sample Cards, Subheaders and Carousels.
